Dead to Me, an Emmy-nominated comedy-thriller by Liz Feldman and available on Netflix, is a page-turning summer beach read thanks to its numerous tantalising turns and captivating crime-fueled drama.
The series, which stars Christina Applegate in a Golden Globe-nominated performance and Linda Cardellini as a messed-up couple of Laguna Beach BFFs who met through tragedy and came together over their love for The Facts of Life, Entenmann’s, and, well, a few deaths and incriminating secrets that follow them wherever they go, has gained a lot of fans for its sense of humour, the astute way it handles trauma, and the breadcrumbs of jaw-dropping
A third season of the series appears to be in the works, and when Season 2 premiered in May 2020, it left many unanswered questions and the show’s trademark crazy cliffhanger. Here is everything we currently know about Dead to Me Season 3, leaving fans to speculate about what will happen to the Netflix Thelma and Louise moving forward.
Dead to Me Season 3 Expected Cast
The convoluted crime series has lots of murder, but the leads haven’t died yet. Jen and Judy survived a devastating automobile wreck at the end of Season 2, so they’ll be back. Since the show is focused on their toxic/reliable friendship, they’ll be there the whole time.
Ben’s James Marsden will return. When Jen killed Judy’s ex-boyfriend Steve in Season 1, it seemed unlikely that Marsden would return. Because who wouldn’t want more Marsden, Dead to Me welcomed him back as Steve’s identical brother Ben. Ben’s still around and involved in Jen and Judy’s drama, so he’ll return. Liz Feldman told Entertainment Weekly, “Ben goes on a journey”
She also said Marsden will play Steve more. Flashbacks indicate we’ll discover more about his shady dealings.
Jen’s kids Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and Henry (Luke Roessler) should remain, as should her unpleasant neighbour Karen (Suzy Nakamura) and detectives Ana Perez (Diana Maria Riva) and Nick Prager (Brandon Scott). We may also see more of corrupt police commander Howard Hastings (Jere Burns), who was unmasked at the end of Season 2.
Last season’s additions were fantastic, but it wasn’t obvious if we’d see them again. Katey Sagal, who plays Judy’s mother, will reportedly return, while Natalie Morales, who plays Michelle, was sighted on site. Their relationships may become increasingly essential to the plot, especially since Judy’s mom is in prison. Frances Conroy, who joined the cast as Ben and Steve’s mother Eileen Woods in Season 2, may return
Dead to Me Season 3 Expected Storyline
Seasons 1 and 2 both focused on one character’s secret: Judy was engaged in the hit-and-run that killed Jen’s husband, and Jen didn’t kill Steve in self-defense. Season 3 will be about another character’s secret. Liz Feldman said she understood where Season 3 would go based on Season 2.
“Another secret,” she said. Ben hit Jen and Judy while drunk driving and fled the scene. Feldman wants to continue exploring the “continuous give and take of, Do you tell someone something that will hurt them?” Next episode should focus on Ben’s reckoning with fleeing the accident, perhaps harming Jen, and the legal case that occurs.
James Marsden told TV Guide that Season 3 could focus on Ben’s challenges. said “He may discover that Jen killed his brother and committed a hit-and-run. Hit-and-run victims. In the first season, his brother hit-and-ran. I think [Ben] tries to look in the mirror when no one is watching and do the right thing, but sometimes the forces overwhelm.”
Given all the road cams in Jen’s neighbourhood, “the forces” will likely “overwhelm,” preventing Ben’s secret from staying hidden for long. Based on paparazzi photos of Christina Applegate in a wheelchair, it looks likely he caused some harm, not merely drove away. If that information comes out, Jen and Judy may try to gain influence over Ben in Season 3.
Detective Perez may have let Jen go after she confessed to killing Steve, but now that they’ve found his body and the investigation is ongoing, if they can link Jen and Judy to the crime (and the evidence is mounting against them), they may need to cut a deal with Ben so Jen and Judy keep quiet about their crimes.
Steve’s money-laundering plot and Greek mob link may return in Season 3. We haven’t met any of the shady figures Steve worked with when he was alive, and it was recently revealed that the chief of police is involved, so consider that a focus of the following season.
Maybe Jen, Judy, and Agent Perez can force the mob to cover up the women’s crimes, or maybe they’ll commit additional crimes. No matter how hard they try, the SoCal friends’ secrets leak.
Dead to Me Season 3 Expected Release Date
Dead to Me’s final episodes will premiere on Netflix at some point in the fall of 2022, Variety confirmed in early May 2022. Although there isn’t an official release date just yet, let’s hope it happens in the early fall considering Season 2 debuted in spring 2020.
(We’re just assuming, but that does seem plausible given that Applegate tweeted back in January that new episodes were arriving “soon” and a Deadline report from late 2021 reported that filming was expected to end in early 2022.
The series started filming in May 2021, but it temporarily ceased in August after Applegate announced on Twitter that she had just received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, or MS. Tweeted she “I received an MS diagnosis a few months ago.
It has been an odd voyage. But the people I know who also have this problem have been very encouraging to me. The road has not been easy. But as we are all aware, the journey continues. Unless a scumbag blocks it.” She tweeted as well, “We wake up and do what is necessary, as one of my MS-affected pals put it. And I carry out that. I now request your privacy. As I work my way through this. I’m grateful xo.”
