Attorney accused of murdering wife and son to be charged, brother says

Murdaugh’s wife and son were slain in their South Carolina home last year, and a grand jury is set to prosecute the beleaguered attorney on murder charges, sources tell the New York Times.

According to three people familiar with the case, the grand jury is anticipated to issue an indictment on charges of two counts of first-degree murder before the end of the week and make its findings public soon afterwards. The indictment has been made public, and Murdaugh has been informed of it.

New evidence has been used to support the indictment. As NBC News has reported, two people who are directly involved in the case say officials have cell phone footage that not only places Murdaugh at a crime scene just before the killings occurred on the night of June 7, 2021, but contradicts a prior sequence of events.

Tuesday afternoon, Murdaugh’s legal team refused to comment.

At their remote estate and hunting lodge in Colleton County just outside Charleston, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, 52, and their 22-year-old son Paul Murdaugh were discovered shot to death. His wife and son had been found dead by Murdaugh, 54, and he had phoned 911 to report the discovery.

On the night of the deaths, Murdaugh’s lawyers had previously claimed that he was spending time with his mother, who suffers from dementia, and her caregiver. They insisted that he had nothing to do with their deaths.

On the same day that the South Carolina Supreme Court decided to disbar Murdaugh, a personal injury attorney, reports surfaced of a potential prosecution. No pending investigations will be affected by Tuesday’s decree from the state Supreme Court.

While investigating Murdaugh’s business practises after the deaths of both his wife and son, prosecutors charged him on many financial-related counts.

In September, when Murdaugh said he had been shot on the side of the road near his family’s estate, investigators said they discovered a financial plan involving him.
Paul Murdaugh’s elder brother Buster, the beneficiary of the $10 million life insurance policy, subsequently learned that Murdaugh had hired a hit man to murder his younger brother to get the money from Paul Murdaugh’s $10 million life insurance policy.

He was attempting to overcome a 20-year opiate addiction at the time, and his terrible judgments were a consequence of the emotional pain he felt after losing both his kid and wife, he claimed.
