Martin Lawrence was born in Frankfurt, West Germany, on April 16, 1965, to African American parents who were serving in the United States military at the time of his birth.

Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent figure in the fight for civil rights, and John F. Kennedy inspired the naming of Lawrence. The split between his parents occurred when he was 8 years old. He spent his adolescence in Queens, New York, where he honed his boxing skills and became an accomplished fighter.

The Thomas G. Pullen School of Creative and Performing Arts and Fairmont Heights High School were both schools that Lawrence attended. After suffering a broken eye, he reconsidered a career in boxing and instead began to develop an interest in acting. Initially, he was considering a career in boxing, but after the injury, he changed his mind about boxing and began to develop his interest in acting.
