American singer Selena Quintanilla Pérez rose to popularity abroad as a member of Selena y Los Dinos and then for her subsequent solo endeavours in both Spanish and English. After constantly requesting permission to create one, Yolanda Saldvar was named president of Selena’s fan club in 1991 by her father and manager, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. Saldvar received a promotion to manager of the singer’s stores in January 1994.

Soon, Selena’s staff, fashion designer, and cousin started criticising Saldvar’s leadership style. Quintanilla Jr. started receiving calls and letters from irate fans in January 1995 who had contributed membership fees but had received nothing in return. He started looking into their complaints and discovered proof that Saldvar had used fake cheques to steal $60,000 from the stores and fan club.

On the morning of March 31, 1995, at the Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Texas, Saldvar fatally shot Selena with a.38 special revolver after the Quintanilla family questioned her about it. Selena was revived by the medical staff, but she passed away from hypovolemic shock. We shall discuss her life and her death in this piece.

Saldvar was born on September 19, 1960, in the Texas city of San Antonio. She is one of the seven kids born to Frank and Juanita Saldvar. Along with being a fan of country music, Saldvar was a nurse in the past.

She started contacting Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, frequently after seeing one of the singer’s performances to ask about creating a fan club for Selena in San Antonio. She requested his advice on how to set up the group. Quintanilla quickly took over as club leader after caving in to Saldvar’s demands and granting them.

Saldvar eventually received a promotion to management of Selena Etc, her network of clothing stores.

The fan club’s membership eventually grew to more than 5,000 individuals by the year 1993, having previously reached 1,500 individuals in a period of less than four years. It is now regarded as one of the most well-known fan communities in the San Antonio region.

Reporters from The Dallas Morning News claimed that Saldvar’s attachment to Selena was bordering on obsession during a 1995 interview with Saldvar. Saldvar expressed her desire to “be like Selena” to the staff at Selena Etc. An unnamed former employee claimed that Saldvar was “possessive” of her connection with Selena and made an effort to keep Selena away from the other workers.

Saldvar, in the opinion of this person, wanted to “have more influence over [the staff] and over Selena.” Saldvar claimed that she separated Selena’s staff from the singer in order to “protect” the performer from the “petty concerns” of running her stores. Saldvar had the authority to manage the stores, as well as accompany Selena on her travels and have access to her home.

Their relationship started to deteriorate when Saldvar joined their network of business contacts. Selena met Monterrey, Mexico-based physician Ricardo Martinez in September 1994. By creating a Selena Etc. store in Monterrey, Selena hoped to increase the number of boutiques.

Martinez claimed to have connections in Mexico that might support her in expanding her company. Although Selena’s family said Martinez was nothing more than an admirer who appeared in multiple photos with her, he eventually became her business advisor. Saldvar started to resent Selena’s reliance on Martinez. He started delivering bouquets to Selena’s hotel room.

Saldvar forewarned the performer that Martinez might be acting improperly. Selena started making increasingly frequent trips to Monterrey, frequently while hiding. Selena would be picked up by Sebastian D’Silva, Martinez’s assistant, who said he saw she was hiding her identity by donning wigs and going by Chris Pérez’s last name.  Martinez claimed that he had given Selena a loan of several thousand dollars because she needed money.

Saldvar was fired from her job after Selena’s family learned in the first week of March that she had been stealing money from the fan club and boutiques starting at the beginning of 1995.

On March 31, Selena gave her permission to meet Saldvar at a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi to get the financial records that Saldvar had been putting off providing. Selena’s objective was to persuade Saldvar to deliver the papers.

Saldvar was able to prevent the move by stating that she had experienced sexual assault in Mexico. When Selena and Saldvar arrived at the neighbourhood hospital, they were informed that because the alleged attack had taken place abroad, a different location would need to be chosen for the gynaecological examination.

Selena reiterated her demand that they present the documents when they got back to the motel. Saldvar then took a.38 calibre Taurus Model 85 handgun out of her purse and pointed it at the performer.

Selena tried to run, but Saldvar shot her in the back, severing an artery as she did. Saldivar chased Selena and called her a “bitch” as she ran into the building’s lobby in an effort to find care for her serious injuries.

The clerk was dialling 911 for help when Selena passed out and fell on the ground. She succumbed to blood loss at 1:05 in the afternoon while receiving medical care in a hospital.
