Brandon Black (“Dear White People,” “Insecure”) understands the importance of his position as the first openly gay character in Tyler Perry’s upcoming film “A Madea Homecoming.”
Perry’s 12th feature is the first time a San Diego native has starred in one of his movies; he plays the lead role of hilarious drag queen Mable “Madea” Simmons in “A Madea Family Funeral,” and he continues his successful connection with streaming behemoth Netflix.
In A Madea Homecoming, the protagonist, Madea, celebrates her great-grandson Tim’s (who is Black) college graduation. Secrets and family turmoil threaten to ruin the happy homecoming and put a damper on the time of rejoicing.
Legendary Irish actor Brendan O’Carroll appears in a cameo role as Agnes Brown, and series regulars Tamela Mann (Cora), David Mann (Mr. Brown), and Cassi Davis Patton (Aunt Bam) also star.

Black, who is out as gay and a part of the LGBTQ+ community, makes his intentions plain for the film’s audience, especially Black LGBTQ+ people.
Black said he wanted to share his experience so that people might see that not all Black homosexual males are depicted negatively. Black’s portrayal of Tim in “Homecoming” demonstrates how Black’s own struggle to accept his sexuality has given him insight into the complex fears felt by closeted LGBTQ+ people.
When Tyler Perry’s first openly gay character
Even though Tyler Perry has been portraying Madea for almost 20 years, the latest instalment in the “Madea” film series is a bold departure from what has come before (first on stage, then in film). Brandon Black plays the first openly gay character in the Netflix original “A Madea Homecoming,” written and directed by Tyler Perry.
In the new comedy, Perry plays a number of parts, including the main one. Brendan O’Carroll portrays another movie star, Agnes Brown. Some secrets are revealed as they come together to celebrate a happy event. Black plays Madea’s great-grandson Tim.
He wants to celebrate his status as valedictorian of his graduating class by paying her a visit. Georgia Voice reports that Black was told by the gay man that he was nervous about coming out to his family. As he put it, “That really overshadows the speech.”
The actor claims that homosexuality runs rampant in his own family. He appreciates the chance to showcase his talents as an out actor in this production. When asked about the film, Black said, “This movie has a message for everyone.”
My impression is that there is something of interest for everyone. Viewers will see a reflection of themselves in Tim, and they will ultimately learn to embrace him for who he is.
The director and writer of the film, Perry, approved the project
Perry continued, “I have been working with Covenant House for a very long time, and many of those kids were LGBTQ+ kids who had been booted out of their house because of their gayness and found themselves living on the streets.”
Every time I return to my home in Wyoming, I can’t help but reflect on the life and death of Matthew Shepard. I find it quite inspiring that she embraces and loves [her great-grandson] and I pray that her actions will serve as an example to people all around the world.
Perry said that since he first invented Madea, she has changed. He said, “She still has the heart and soul and all the things she’s had from the beginning.”
What she does, it seems to me, is all about using humour as a tranquillizer to get to the real issues that are plaguing us. Therefore, I believe she is now prepared to join the rest of the world. The outcome of growing up and gaining life experience.
