On June 26, 1970, Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. was born in the neighbourhood of Hollis in the city of New York. He grew up with his brother Chris, and the two of them would eventually co-found the company that would become known as Murder Inc. Irving has a total of seven further brothers and sisters.
The family lived from paycheck to paycheck because his father worked as a taxi driver. In the end, Lorenzo Jr. agreed to start trafficking drugs so that he could make more money. Thankfully, Irving’s venture into criminal activity was cut short when he was apprehended by the authorities not long after he began peddling crack and cocaine for the first time.

Irv Gotti was given his own label within Def Jam by Russell Simmons after assisting Def Jam with the success of DMX and Jay-Z. Irv Gotti chose the name Murder, Inc. for his record company after seeing the Murder, Inc. logo on the screen of Biography on A&E during gangster week. Murder, Inc. released hits for murder, and Irv wanted to release hit music.
Irv, Ja Rule, and the Murder Inc. label were all parties to a highly publicised dispute with G-Unit Records, Aftermath Records, and Shady Records concerning Ja Rule and 50 Cent’s past. Following this, Murder Inc. changed their name to The Inc. after charges of money laundering were brought against Gotti and his brother Christopher in connection with alleged financial transactions involving New York City drug lord Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff in 2003.
This investigation included a raid on the Murder Inc. offices in Manhattan. A jury cleared the brothers of all charges on December 2, 2005. The label would alter its name to better appeal to the general audience.
Irv would relocate the label to Universal Motown under the The Inc. name and sign Vanessa Carlton. Heroes and Thieves, Vanessa Carlton’s third album, was co-produced by Gotti, Channel 7, Rick Rubin, and Stephan Jenkins. It was released on October 9, 2007.
