Anthony David Leighton Scott is a name that is well known in the film industry in England.

Films such as Top Gun (1986), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Days of Thunder (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Man on Fire (2004), Déjà Vu (2006), and Unstoppable earned him a reputation as an accomplished director of action and thriller movies (2010).

Scott was Sir Ridley Scott’s younger brother and a film director in his own right. Both of them received their degrees in cinema directing from the prestigious Royal College of Art in London.

And they were among the first wave of British directors to find success in Hollywood after beginning their careers as commercial directors for television.

In the year 1995, the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema was given to both Tony and Ridley. In 2010, they were honoured with the BAFTA Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment.

Scott was the youngest of three sons of Elizabeth (née Williams) and Colonel Francis Percy Scott, a Royal Engineer. Dixon Scott, a granduncle, opened Tyneside theatres.

Newcastle’s One Tyneside Cinema is the UK’s last newsreel theatre. Tony attended Rosebank School, West Hartlepool College of Art, and Sunderland Art School. At 16, he appeared in Ridley’s directorial debut Boy and Bicycle.

Tony Scott studied art in Leeds after being rejected from the RCA (he would succeed in a later attempt). In 1969, he filmed One of the Missing by Ambrose Bierce.

Tony cast his brother because Ridley had previously cast him. In April 2012, he said, “The film cost £1,000.” He starred in “Don’t Walk” at the Royal College of Art, where he was instructed by Raymond Durgnat.

Tony directed 1996’s “The Fan” and 1998’s “Enemy of the State” “Spy Game” and “Domino” starred Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. He directed “Numb3rs” and “The A-Team” in 2007 and 2010.

Tony directed “Beat the Devil,” “Agent Orange,” and two “Hunger” episodes (1997; 1999). He directed Kenny Loggins’ 1986 “Danger Zone” video and George Michael’s 1988 “One More Try” video.

Personal Life

Scott has three marriages. In 1967, he wed TV production designer Gerry Boldy (1944–2007), who had won a BAFTA Award. In 1974, they divorced.

In 1986, he wed advertising executive Glynis Sanders, beginning his second marriage. When his affair with Brigitte Nielsen, who was at the time Sylvester Stallone’s wife and whom he met on the set of Beverly Hills Cop II, became public, they were divorced a year later.

Then, in 1990, on the set of Days of Thunder, he met the film and television actress Donna Wilson, who was 24 years his junior; they later got married in 1994. Frank and Max, their identical sons, were born to her in 2000.

Tony Scott Death

At the age of 68, Scott committed suicide on August 19, 2012, by leaping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles. A note he left for his family at his workplace and one in his car were both discovered by police.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office reported that Tony died from “several blunt force injuries” in October 2012 and that eszopiclone, a sleep aid, and mirtazapine, an antidepressant, were discovered in his system.

Ridley revealed to “Variety” in November 2014 that Tony had been battling cancer and that the family had chosen to keep the illness a secret both throughout his treatments and immediately following his passing.

Scott won two Emmys for “The Gathering Storm” in 2002 and “Gettysburg” in 2011. Other nominations were for “RKO 281” (2000), “The Andromeda Strain” (2008), “The Good Wife” (2010 and 2011), and “The Pillars of the Earth” (2011).

“One of the Missing” won Best Short Film at the 1971 Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival, while “The Pillars of the Earth” won Best Dramatic Mini-Series or TV Movie at the 2011 Gemini Awards. Tony and Ridley won a BAFTA Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment in 2011.

In 1995, “True Romance” was nominated for an International Fantasy Film Award at the Fantasporto festival, while “The Fan” was nominated for a Golden Seashell the following year.

“Beat the Devil” was nominated for a DVD Exclusive Award for Best Internet Video Premiere in 2003. In 2011, “Unstoppable” won him AARP Movies for Grownups Award nominations for Best Director and Best Action Movie.

Tony was nominated for a CinEuphoria Award for “Stoker” He was nominated for two PGA Awards for “The Gathering Storm” (2003) and “The Good Wife” (2012).
