Why Is The Little Mermaid Black: Halle Bailey Casting Controversy

The Lion King, another one of Disney’s live-action adaptations of one of its animated masterpieces, will shortly be released in theatres, and live-action versions of Mulan and The Little Mermaid are currently in production.

The latter film’s cast list is beginning to take shape, and Halle Bailey has been cast in the part of the eponymous character. This casting decision has resulted in an internet campaign in which fans are using the hashtag #NotMyAriel.

Rob Marshall, who will helm the upcoming movie, commented that singer and actress Bailey possessed the “intrinsic traits” necessary for the part. So, what exactly is it about the casting that has so many people so enraged?

Halle Bailey is selected for playing Ariel

After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of heart, youth, spirit, innocence, and substance along with a glorious singing voice,” the film’s director Rob Marshall said in a statement on July 3, 2019. These are all intrinsic qualities that are required to play this iconic role.

On Twitter, Bailey voiced her excitement with the casting, describing the experience as “a dream come true.”

Little Mermaid: Black Cast Controversy

To put it more succinctly, it’s due to the fact that Halle Bailey is black, and the folks who are upset want the character to appear like she did in the animated picture.

A number of users on the internet have stated that they want the entertainment giant to recast the role and hire someone who appears to have the same appearance as Ariel did in the cartoon. These individuals have criticised Disney for pandering to diversity.

Some people have even speculated that there could be a scientific basis for mermaids having a pale complexion, given that living underwater would cause them to have less melanin in their bodies.

People who are more knowledgeable about medicine pointed out that melanin generating cells are dependent on genetics rather than exposure to sunshine, which led to the assertions having a difficult time holding water.

Why Little Mermaid is black: The reason behind Halle Bailey selection

Jodi Benson, who provided the voice of the character in the animated picture that was released in 1989, is one of the many people who have spoken out in support of the decision to cast Bailey as Ariel.

The person who plays the lead character in “The Little Mermaid” needs to be able to act and sing, and Bailey’s career to this point implies that she is completely outstanding in both of these areas.

When you consider that the main character is a mermaid, you have to ask yourself why people are getting so worked up over the fact that the character’s skin colour is ridiculous.

You know, a half-fish fantasy creature that doesn’t truly exist in the first place (sorry to break it to you, kids, but mermaids aren’t real and the lady at Disney World is just making it up).

Those who have criticised the casting for the reason that the actors are black rather than white have been accused of racism, and this accusation is not unjustified.

It is not the actress’s performance that is causing them concern with the casting, but rather the actress’s skin colour.

Will Disney recast Ariel?

Disney has absolutely no intention of recasting Ariel, as evidenced by a network that is owned by the firm and which has criticised the outcry at the hiring of Halle Bailey and emphasised that the story they are telling is fictional, which means that they can tell it anyway they like.

What would we see in The Little Mermaid?

Although we predict that the tale of the remake will be very similar to the story of the original animated film, we do know that new songs will be incorporated in the remake.

Lin-Manuel Miranda contributed to the production of the film, working alongside Alan Menken, the film’s original music supervisor. Miranda stated in February 2020 that he has written four brand new songs specifically for the live-action adaptation of the musical.

In February of 2022, Miranda confirmed that none of the songs that you adore would be replaced by any of the new tracks, and that all of the songs will be featured.

There is no one who appreciates Disney’s The Little Mermaid more than I do. He gave an interview to Variety and said, “I’m delighted to see the possibilities we unearthed for some other compositions.”

He mentioned that Ursula will not be receiving a new song during the second half of the movie when she transforms into a human like Ariel does (spoiler alert), but Ursula does receive a new song for Ariel.

“Ariel was unable to speak for a short period of time, but Rob Marshall devised a resourceful method to communicate with her at that time.”

We wrote some music for her to accompany her time on earth. Miranda made light of the situation by saying, “She experiences many firsts like a person who has legs for the first time.”

The Little Mermaid Release Date

The premiere of Disney’s The Little Mermaid will take place in theatres on May 26, 2023, and a streaming debut on Disney+ is expected to follow the conclusion of the film’s run in traditional cinemas (usually 45 days from its release).
