After suffering an injury to his right thumb during the Dallas Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night, quarterback Dak Prescott stated that he plans to have surgery on his thumb on Monday.
The injury occurred during the game. According to various reports, it is anticipated that he will be out for six to eight weeks, and the injury will most likely result in him being placed on injured reserve.
While throwing a pass in the fourth quarter, Prescott suffered an injury when he made contact with the hand of outside linebacker Shaq Barrett.
Dak Prescott Hand Injury & Medication
On Monday, Prescott is scheduled to meet with the hand specialist for the Cowboys; however, many sources have indicated that in order to stabilise the joint, he will have a pin and plate surgically implanted in the area.
According to Prescott, his first reaction was that he had jammed a finger, and he didn’t think the injury was too bad. However, he walked to the locker room to get X-rays, which revealed that he had fractured his bone.
After the game, while wearing a splint on his right hand, Prescott commented, “I was informed it was lot cleaner than it might have been.”
The coach, Mike McCarthy, described the incident as “a severe injury.”
Cowboy team without Dak Prescott
Cooper Rush will make his first start at quarterback for the Cowboys when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals the following week. Will Grier is the Cowboys’ No. 3 quarterback, and he is currently on the practise squad.
Rush won his first career start last year against the Minnesota Vikings when Prescott was sidelined with a right calf strain.
After taking over for Prescott against Tampa Bay, he completed 7 of 13 passes for 64 yards. Against the Vikings, he threw for 325 yards and two touchdown passes in the 20-16 victory.
Prescott and other players reactions
“Obviously going to miss some time, not be there for my team and that’s what hurts more than anything,” said Prescott. “Injuries happen, can’t necessarily control it, just unfortunate.”
“It’s very upsetting, but injuries happen, can’t necessarily control it, just unfortunate.” It’s terrible that we won’t necessarily have the opportunity to answer for several weeks, as we had hoped to do so, but we won’t definitely have that opportunity.
But I’ll continue to do what I’ve always done whenever difficulty appears: I’ll charge it head-on and give it everything I’ve got, and I’m confident that I’ll emerge from this experience stronger.
Cowboys performance got effected
The Cowboys failed to score a touchdown in their season opener for the first time since the year 2001. Dak Prescott, who now has a career record of 2-5 in season openers played, completed 14 of 29 passes for 134 yards, had one interception and was sacked twice. The Cowboys were also held scoreless.
The Cowboys have not started a season with fewer than six points scored since their season opener on September 10, 1989, a loss to the New Orleans Saints by a score of 28-0.
That game marked the beginning of Jerry Jones’ tenure as owner and general manager, as well as the first game for Troy Aikman and Jimmy Johnson in the NFL.
Dak Prescott Past Injuries
The thumb injury capped off a strange week for Prescott, who was limited in Thursday’s practise due to a sore ankle that he blamed on a new pair of cleats.
Prescott kept insisting he was fine and said it would not be an issue against the Buccaneers after going through full workouts Friday and Saturday. The thumb injury occurred on Thursday.
In the fifth game of the 2020 season, against the New York Giants, Prescott suffered a complex fracture and dislocation of his right ankle.
He recovered to start 16 games the next season and established a Cowboys single-season record with 37 touchdown passes. He missed one start due to a calf injury.
What happened in the game
Brett Maher kicked a field goal from 51 yards out to give the Cowboys a 3-0 lead on their first drive of the game on Sunday. Dak Prescott completed passes to four different receivers on that drive, and the Cowboys moved 54 yards in 14 plays to take the lead.
It took them three and a half series before they would gain another first down, and it came on a run by Prescott that covered 12 yards.
After the first drive, CeeDee Lamb caught one pass from Prescott, but only caught one more pass from him the rest of the game.
The 134 yards that Dak Prescott threw for in this game were the second fewest he has ever had in a game that he has started and finished in his career. On November 30, 2017, against Washington, he had 102 yards on 11-of-22 passing attempts.
Prescott is out again for the game
After starting 69 consecutive games from 2016 to 2020, Dak Prescott has already been sidelined for 12 games over the past two seasons and is likely going to miss seven more games this season.
The Cowboys have a bye week on November 6 and play a road game against the Green Bay Packers on November 13.
“Yeah, it’s just another bump in the road, and I’ll keep pushing forward,” Prescott said. “Obviously, it’s not what you want to hear, but it’s not the worst thing that’s happened to me.”
As I promised, I will do all in my power that is within my ability to get myself back on track, grow stronger, and contribute to the success of this team.
