American former professional boxer Michael Gerard Tyson competed from 1985 until 2005. Tyson is regarded as one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time.

In July of 1991, Tyson was arrested for the alleged rape of a woman named Desiree Washington, who was 18 years old and was the reigning Miss Black Rhode Island at the time.

In 1992, he was found guilty and received a sentence of six years in prison and four years of probation for the crime he committed.

According to Washington’s allegations, Tyson sexually assaulted her in the small hours of the night at an Indianapolis hotel room.

Tyson disputed the rape charges and said that the sexual encounter took place with both parties’ consent.

Virginia Foster, who was Tyson’s chauffeur, stated that Washington was in a state of shock after the incident.

After the incident, a physician at the emergency room named Thomas Richardson evaluated Washington and confirmed that Washington’s physical condition was compatible with rape.

After spending a little under three years of his sentence, Mike Tyson was eventually granted his freedom in March of 1995.

According to federal law, he is forced to register as a Tier II sexual offender for the rest of his life.

Tyson said everything happened with Washington’s consent and he didn’t force himself on her during direct examination by lead defence attorney Vincent J. Fuller.

Tyson denied misrepresenting Washington to prosecutor Gregory Garrison and insisted she desired sex. [78] Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 following a 10-hour jury deliberation.

Alan Dershowitz, Tyson’s attorney, appealed the deletion of evidence of the victim’s past sexual activity (the Rape Shield Law), the exclusion of three possible defence witnesses, and the lack of a jury instruction on honest and reasonable mistake of fact.

Indiana’s appeals court voted 2–1 against Tyson. Due to a 2–2 decision, the Indiana Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s ruling. The Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice recused himself, causing a tie vote.

The Chief Justice later acknowledged he did so after his wife and Dershowitz argued about the issue at a Yale Law School reunion. Tyson was sentenced to prison and probation on March 26, 1992.

In April 1992, he was transferred to the Indiana Youth Center (now Plainfield Correctional Facility) and released in March 1995.

After being granted parole, Tyson comfortably defeated Peter McNeeley and Buster Mathis Jr. in their rematches.

More than US$96 million was made by Tyson’s first fight after a lengthy absence, including a record-breaking $63 million for pay-per-view television in the US.

1.52 million homes purchased PPVs to see the fight, breaking previous records for both viewership and income. It was said that Tyson’s managers lined up “tomato cans” for the 89-second battle to assure easy wins for his comeback.

The Tyson-McNeeley bout included on TV Guide’s 1998 list of the 50 Greatest TV Sports Moments of All Time.
