why is my roku not connecting to the internet

After a hard day at work, there’s nothing better than settling in front of the TV with some popcorn and your favourite programme. A few of days ago, I planned to do that same thing, but as soon as I turned on my TV, I discovered that my Roku just would not connect to the Wi-Fi. After doing some troubleshooting on my own, I decided to seek help online.

It turns out that Roku customers often have issues with the device not connecting to the wifi network, and this is one of the most prevalent difficulties among Roku users overall, alongside Roku overheating. Many effective solutions exist for this widespread issue.

In case you run into the same issue, I’ve done the legwork and put out a detailed tutorial like this post to assist you out. So, let’s investigate this issue thoroughly to find out what’s causing it.

Why Is Roku Not Connecting?

There are several potential causes for connection problems, which might halt media playing and perhaps negatively impact the Roku’s overall functionality.

Common problems include:

  • A shaky wireless connection might halt playing or reduce overall performance.
  • The internet connection can be momentarily lost if there is a power failure or router malfunction.
  • Potential network bandwidth hogs include video gaming consoles and personal PCs.
  • Perhaps the wired devices’ Ethernet cable became disconnected.
  • Rarely, the Roku device itself may be broken or malfunctioning.

How Do I Check My Roku’s Internet Connection Status?

Roku's Internet Connection Status
  • When troubleshooting a Roku, the first thing to check is whether or not the device is connected to the internet, and if so, the quality and strength of the internet connection.
  • To access the side menu from the home screen, hit the left button on the remote. The next step is to find the Settings menu.
  • To access the Network settings, click the Right button twice on the remote. Again, swipe right to get to the Network section.
  • You can go one of two ways with this. Either we may use the Check Connection tool or we can look at the connection information on the About page. The information that will eventually be shown on the About page is to the right. Type of connection, IP address, MAC address, signal strength, wireless channel, and transfer rates are all shown here. If none of this data is filled in, it signifies you do not have an active internet connection. Do not proceed if you are not online.
  • Check Connection may be used as a last resort if you’re having difficulty accessing the internet despite the About page’s assurances. The test may be initiated by selecting OK and then scrolling down to Check Connection. The current state of your network, internet connection, and signal strength/download speed will display in a pop-up window.

If you are online and your download and upload speeds are satisfactory, you may test whether or not the issue has been resolved by playing media using a streaming app.

How To Fix It When Roku Won’t Connect To Internet

Roku Won't Connect To Internet

Solution 1: Power Cycling Devices

Most often, the mistake is the result of a disagreement between launch settings, however manipulation of such configurations is also a possible reason. Therefore, in this procedure, we will be cycling power to the devices in order to erase any stored information. This will also flush the router’s DNS cache. For that purpose:

  • The method is easier to do if all gadgets are turned off and their power cords are removed.
  • Devices need to have their “Power” buttons held down for at least 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power source and toggle on the switch.
  • As soon as the gadgets power up, check to see whether the problem still exists.

Solution 2: Resetting Network Settings

If the Roku’s network settings have been corrupt, the device may no longer perform as expected. Because of this, we will be resetting the network settings now. For that purpose:

  • Get Roku going by opening up your account and signing in.
  • Go into the menu and choose “System.”
  • Choose “System Restart” and then “Network Connection Reset” from the next screen.
  • All you have to do is let the gadget reset, and it will start up again.
  • Select “Settings” and then “Network” from the menu that appears when you power on the device.
  • Access the “Setup a New Wifi Connection” menu by clicking the “Wifi” tab.
  • If you’re already at home, you may skip ahead and choose “I am at home” while connecting to a wireless network.
  • All other choices should be set to “Automatic,” and the password should be entered.
  • After the link is established, examine whether the problem still exists.

Why Does It Say Unable To Connect To The Internet?

The Roku’s inability to establish an internet connection indicates either a weak signal or problems with the underlying network. In the latter case, it’s possible that your modem is malfunctioning or that service is temporarily unavailable, despite the fact that the router is still powered on and operational.

Why Is Roku Not Working?

Roku Not Working

Roku players will not function properly if they do not have access to the internet, so a temporary outage or weak signal can hinder the device’s performance. If you have a solitary Roku, you may try moving it around to see if that helps the Wi-Fi connection. Using an Ethernet cable to connect to your router offers a more stable and fast connection if you are in close proximity to it.
