north korea fires missile over japan

It appears that North Korea intentionally escalated the situation by firing a missile over Japan in order to grab the attention of Tokyo and Washington. The missile was believed to have been fired from North Korea.

Before crashing into the Pacific Ocean, the ballistic missile had travelled approximately 4,500 kilometres, or 2,800 miles. This distance was sufficient for the missile to reach the island territory of Guam, which is part of the United States. Check full story below in the post.

North Korea Ban For Nuclear Weapon Test

Since 2017, this is the first time that North Korea has fired a missile over Japan. Due to the launch, Japan issued an unusual warning to some of its people, instructing them to seek cover.

The United Nations has placed a ban on North Korea conducting nuclear or ballistic weapon tests. It is also a violation of international laws to fly missiles towards or over the territory of other countries without providing prior warning or seeking consultation.

The vast majority of nations steer clear of doing it entirely due to how readily it might be misinterpreted as an attack. Even though it is not as significant as a nuclear test, which may be the next step, it is still quite likely to provoke more action.

Japan’s People Under Alert

According to reports, residents of northern Japan, including the island of Hokkaido and the city of Aomori, were awoken by the sound of sirens and text notifications that read: “It appears like North Korea has fired a missile into the air. In the event of an evacuation, please take shelter in structures or underground.”

They were given the warning to watch out for falling debris as the missile soared directly above them. According to accounts, many appeared to maintain their composure, and a video from Tokyo showed commuters walking normally despite the warnings that were being broadcast over loudspeakers.

Others, however, appeared to be more alarmed. According to a statement made by an Aomori resident named Kazuko Ebina to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, “If a missile hit, I was scared it would be a tremendous problem not only here but also nationwide.”

No Injuries Due To Missile

Later, officials announced that the intermediate-range ballistic missile had crashed into the Pacific Ocean, which is located a significant distance from Japan. There were no injuries that were reported. It had travelled the furthest distance ever travelled by a North Korean missile and had reached an altitude of around one thousand kilometres, which is higher than the International Space Station.

The launch was referred to as “violent behaviour” by the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, while the Minister of Defense of Japan, Yasukazu Hamada, stated that Japan would not rule out any measures for strengthening its defences, including “counterattack capabilities.”

Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the United States National Security Council, referred to it as a “dangerous and foolish decision” that was “destabilising” to the region.

Japan, United States & South Korea Are Together

The launch takes place at a time when Japan, the United States, and South Korea are cooperating to enhance their defences in response to the mounting threat posed by the North. The three nations’ navies worked together for the first time since 2017 to carry out joint drills just the week before last.

These kinds of drills have long irritated the leader of Pyongyang, Kim Jong-un, who sees them as evidence that his adversaries are making preparations for war. As a direct response to the joint exercises that took place in 2017, North Korea launched two missiles over Japan. Following that, a week later, it carried out a nuclear test.

Intelligence gathered more recently suggests that North Korea is getting ready to conduct a nuclear test with another weapon. It is anticipated that North Korea will wait until after the Communist party congress that will take place later this month in China, which is its most important ally.

North Korea Ready For Nuclear Blast?

They believe that North Korea is setting the ground for a nuclear test, and they feel that the launch on Tuesday is evidence of that preparation. However, some analysts are now wondering if it could occur sooner than predicted. The launch of the missile is the sixth one that Pyongyang has conducted in the past week.

On Saturday, two missiles splashed down in waters that were outside the exclusive economic zone of Japan. Many of North Korea’s missile tests are carried out on a high, lofted flight path. This allows the missiles to reach a high height while avoiding flying over the country’s other neighbours.

However, North Korean scientists are able to test missiles under conditions “that are more reflective of the conditions they’d endure in real-world use” when they fire them over or over Japan, as an expert named Ankit Panda explained to the news agency Reuters.

Japan & North Korea Past Is Not So Good Either

These activities have helped to contribute to the ongoing tensions that exist between North Korea and Japan, which have their roots in Japan’s prior colonisation of Korea from 1910 through 1945, as well as in the North’s abduction of Japanese residents in the past.

Following the passage of a legislation earlier this month that declared North Korea to be a nuclear weapons state, Kim Jong-un, the country’s leader, categorically rejected the idea of engaging in denuclearization negotiations.

Between the years 2006 and 2017, Pyongyang carried out a total of six nuclear tests, which resulted in extensive sanctions. The East Asian nation often violates the ban on conducting nuclear and missile tests, despite the fact that it claims the tests are necessary to strengthen its defences.
