In a new interview, Carrie Underwood discusses the terrifying fall that required 40-50 stitches in her face and surgery to repair a broken wrist.

The 35-year-old “Cry Pretty” singer talked to Hoda Kotb of the Today show about her accident and recovery in a wide-ranging interview that aired on Thursday.

Underwood explained the incident to Kotb as “just kind of a freak accident.” “What happened was that I tripped and fell. As I was letting my dogs out, I tripped and hurt myself. Literally, anyone is susceptible to this happening to them.”

A further comment from her is as follows: “If I had fallen in a different spot, I don’t think it would have been such a big deal. I attempted to correct my fall, but I failed to notice a single, inconsequential step.”

Underwood had a fall outside her Nashville home on November 10, 2017, as was previously confirmed. She told Today that her 3-year-old son Isaiah was sleeping in the next room.

In December 2017, Below Deck alum Adrienne Gang posted a picture with her, marking the first time fans had seen Underwood since the fall. Underwood had gone dark on social media for a brief period of time during recovery.

The country star underwent surgery on her wrist and “40 and 50 stitches” to her face in January, seven weeks after the accident, according to a statement she released to her fan club members.

Kotb reportedly told the singer that she thinks she looks “terrific,” “similarly, Underwood said Thursday, “At first, I wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out. To put it bluntly, it wasn’t pretty.”

She also told Kotb, “Every day I’m feeling a little more back to normal, and I have a dedicated team of professionals who can spackle and paint and paste.”

In April, Underwood posted the first photo of her face online since the accident; it was a black-and-white profile photo of her looking serious inside a recording studio. She posted a close-up of her face two days later.

Therefore, her left hand was fine, and she explained why.

“I took a step backward in an attempt to correct myself, but only missed it by a hair. If I’d landed on my feet somewhere else, I’d have been fine.

The 35-year-old continued by explaining how her injuries slowed her productivity at the office. It really slowed me down,” Underwood said.

“The most difficult aspect was exercising with a broken wrist because it made me realize how much of a wrench it can be to have an appendage that is there but you can’t use.

After going into hiding for about five months after the incident, the country music superstar made her big return at Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards.

As she explained in a note to her fan club members, “there is also another part of the story that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end.” That your life could be altered by pure chance is crazy.

Then she went on to say “Unfortunately, I also hurt my face while trying to avoid breaking my wrist any further. Spared you the gory details, but the doctor told [Underwood’s husband] Mike that he had put between 40 and 50 stitches in when I came out of surgery the night of my fall.”
