Hurricane G death

New York City’s Hurricane G, Gloria Rodriguez, has passed away at the age of 52. EPMD’s Erick Sermon, who had a daughter with Rodriguez, confirmed the news of the Puerto Rican MC’s death. Rodriguez is best known for her No. 10 hot rap single hit “Somebody Else” in 1997, as well as her bilingual songs like “Underground Lockdown” and “El Barrio.”

The day has hardened my heart. On Sunday, Sermon paid tribute to the late “HURRICANEGLORIA,” the mother of his eldest daughter, in an Instagram post, writing, “One of my good friends…. my oldest daughter’s mother passed away today” (Nov. 6).

The first female rap star from Puerto Rico broke into a rap duet. She was featured alongside hip-most hop’s influential women like @redmangilla, @keithmurray, and @diddy in many early issues of hip-hop magazines.

Rodriguez first rose to prominence with her appearance on Redman’s “Tonight’s da Night” in 1992, and the two reunited two years later for “We Run N.Y.” from Redman’s Dare Iz a Darkside album. After appearing on tracks by artists like Xzibit, Funkdoobiest, Keith Murray, and Puff Daddy,

she released her first full-length Spanglish album, All Woman, on the New York label H.O.L.A. Recordings in 1997. Along with Sermon, Redman, Murray, and Jamal, she was the first woman to join the East Coast hip-hop crew Def Squad.

There was no official cause of death announced, but on May 20, Rodriguez’s daughter Lexus posted on Facebook that her mother had advanced lung cancer. She wrote at the time, “My mom has stage 4 lung cancer.” I’m not sure how many of you get what that means, but I’m still trying to figure it out after 30 years of life.

It’s the first time in my life that I’ve ever cried so much or felt so far removed from reality. Still, it’s always my mom who’s the rock, assuring me that “don’t worry baby” everything will turn out okay. Oh my god, I can’t stop crying, but thank God for today.
