Though Alan Jackson and his wife Denise have been a fan favorite for decades, there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye.

The two became fast friends and then lovers while attending high school together in Newnan, Georgia. Because Denise’s maiden name was also Jackson, she didn’t even have to change it when they tied the knot on December 15, 1979.

During the early years of their marriage, when Denise was still working as a flight attendant, she played a crucial role in helping her husband realize his dream of becoming a country music superstar after she spotted Glen Campbell at the airport.

She went up to him and told him her husband wanted to be a country singer, prompting Campbell to hand her a business card for his Nashville publishing company. It was that firm that gave Alan Jackson his first break as a songwriter by signing him to a publishing contract and introducing him to influential people in the music industry.

Despite Alan’s early professional successes, he and Denise quickly began a family. Their firstborn, Mattie Denise, was born on June 19, 1990, and he released his first album, Here in the Real World, in February of that year.

The birth of Alison Jane Alexandra occurred on August 23, 1993, and Dani Grace arrived on August 28, 1997. The success of Jackson’s career allowed him to provide for his family by constructing a huge plantation-style mansion reminiscent of Tara from Gone With the Wind.

For their 41st wedding anniversary, Alan and Denise Jackson posted a photo of themselves to Instagram on December 15, 2020.

This hasn’t always been a happily-ever-after for the couple, despite how content they appear to be now. Denise and her writing partner Ellen Vaughn published a book in 2007 titled It’s All About Him: Finding the Love of My Life, in which Denise discussed Jackson’s infidelity and the couple’s 1997 breakup. She dished to the press,

“The book’s message of forgiveness and the potential for healing after confronting issues and betrayals is central to its overall theme. We’re not alone; we estimate that roughly 50% of all marriages go through something similar, yet only a tiny fraction of those relationships make it.”

In 2010, when Denise was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, Alan was there to support his wife through this difficult time in their marriage. According to an interview he gave to Coping Magazine, “for better or for worse” was the first time he really felt like

he was living up to that part of their wedding vows. Denise’s cancer was cured after two months of treatment, and Jackson wrote “When I Saw You Leaving,” a moving ballad that appeared on his album Thirty Miles West in 2012.

Not only did Denise play the obvious role of a supportive spouse, but she also assisted Alan in developing his unique style. Jackson gave an interview to Parade magazine in which he discussed his preference for white cowboy hats.

“I’ve made a couple of attempts to dress in all black. But I’m naturally quite fair, with blonde hair, and it looks terrible on me. And my better half is like, “You know what? You don’t have a dark enough skin tone to pull off that hat. You need an honest friend or partner, right?

The famous singer gave this marriage advice to The Boot as well. What I mean is, “I don’t care if it’s somebody who seems compatible or your soul mate… You have to put in consistent effort,” Alan said. My experience has taught me that it’s better to learn to treat strangers with kindness than friends and family members.

Both “She Likes It Too” and “Remember When” by Michael Jackson revolve around Alan and Denise’s love story. Denise and their three daughters make an appearance in the music video for “Remember When,” which is pretty cool.

Last Words

Alan’s success in the entertainment industry led to the construction of a sprawling plantation-style home for his family, modeled after Tara in Gone with the Wind.

Everything looked like a fairytale from the outside, but on the inside, it was falling apart. That they had divorced in 1997, after being together for eighteen years, came as a huge shock to everyone.

Denise’s 2007 tell-all book, co-written with Elle Vaughn, It’s All About Him: Finding The Love Of My Life, reveals that the couple’s breakup was precipitated by betrayal; specifically, Alan’s infidelity.

However, the tragedy that nearly destroyed her life ultimately brought her the greatest blessings. After they broke up, she was able to forgive her husband because she had recommitted herself to God and her Christian faith. They sought help from marriage counselors and were back together a year later.
