The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made headlines in September 2020 when they announced a groundbreaking multi-year deal between Netflix and Archewell Productions, the media production arm of Archewell. The original agreement specified that they would produce a wide variety of content, including documentaries, docuseries, movies, scripted shows, and programming aimed specifically at children.
Since then, speculation has persisted about the future of the Sussexes’ production company in relation to those properties, with various confirmations and denials having already occurred. Is this one of the most hotly debated topics? A reality show focused solely on the Sussex family.
People reported in November 2022 that the documentary series would premiere on Netflix in December 2022, and a week later, Page Six confirmed the date as December 8, 2022. The first teaser trailer for the show, titled simply Harry & Meghan, was released by Netflix on December 1, and the full trailer followed on December 4.
The first three episodes, which make up Volume I, will be released on December 8, and the remaining three episodes, which make up Volume II, will be released on December 15.
It will feature “commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed,” as well as “historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press,” as the promotional material puts it.
In October, Meghan Officially Announced The Netflix Series
For a long time, the show’s very existence was in doubt, but in a recent interview with Variety, Meghan reassured fans that production would indeed proceed. When a reporter inquired about the Liz Garbus-helmed docuseries, Meghan responded,
“It’s nice to be able to entrust our story to someone else, especially a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired, even if it may not be told exactly as we envisioned it. Nonetheless, that’s not the point. We’ve decided to give someone else the reins to our story, which means it will be told from their perspective.”
Then, when discussing Archewell’s work, Meghan remarked later in the interview, “How my husband and I came to be is a major lens through which we view the world. That’s what people all over the world found so touching about our wedding, I believe. In general, romantic love is very popular. In no way am I excluded from that feeling.
Our concept of love encompasses a wide range of relationships, from romantic to platonic to self-centered to familial. For us, that’s the minimum bar for the TV shows and documentaries we support.”
The announcement follows Meghan’s exclusive interview with The Cut from August, in which she discussed the couple’s upcoming Netflix slate.
When asked about the rumors of a reality show following her and Prince Harry around with their children, Meghan initially shot them down. The duchess made a distinction between a historical documentary and a reality docuseries and said, “The piece of my life I haven’t been able to share, that people haven’t been able to see, is our love story.”
Who Directed The Docuseries About Meghan Markle And Prince Harry?
Director Liz Garbus, who has been nominated for an Oscar for her work on the documentaries Love, Marilyn and What Happened, Miss Simone? will be in charge of the upcoming docuseries.
During an interview with Variety, Meghan gushed about Garbus, calling her “a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired.” In an interview for The Cut’s cover in August, she said, “Liz Garbus is incredible.”
What Is Harry And Meghan’s Netflix Show About?
Since leaving their positions as senior royals and moving to the United States, it is said that the documentary will follow the couple on some of their adventures since they first arrived.
According to a Netflix statement, the show will examine “the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.
” The series sheds light on the couple’s love story, but it also paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other through the commentary of friends and family, many of whom have never spoken publicly about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the current state of the British Commonwealth and the royal family’s relationship with the press.
Markle told The Cut, “The part of my life I haven’t been able to share, that people haven’t been able to see, is our love story.” When asked about a theme, she said, “resounding knowing that, above all, love wins… I hope that is the sentiment that people feel when they see any of the content or the projects that we are working on.”
According to her, “it’s really nice to be able to tell your own story when the media has shaped the story around you.”
What exactly is covered is unclear, but it has been reported that cameras will be following the Sussexes during the 2022 Invictus Games and their trip to New York City in September 2021.
How Many Episodes Is Harry & Meghan?
Harry & Meghan will have six episodes and is being marketed as a “limited series.” From the looks of the preview, the episodes will cover their entire relationship, from their first tentative dates and vacations together to their current life as parents in Montecito, California.
The trailer also featured a number of previously unseen photographs, such as a few touching pregnancy photos and some candid shots from a wedding or vacation in Botswana.
Netflix describes Liz Garbus’s “Harry & Meghan: Here We Go Again” as an “intimate look at the secretive days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.”
