Russian drone strikes damage 5 buildings in Ukraine capital

Five buildings were damaged by Russian drone strikes in Kyiv on Wednesday, but many more were reportedly prevented from being hit by Ukrainian air defences. There were no reported deaths.

Russian attacks on Ukraine have devastated infrastructure and other population centres, primarily in the country’s east and south, in recent weeks, and these attacks show that Ukraine’s largest city is still at risk.

In a brief video statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that terrorists had fired 13 drones made in Iran, all of which had been intercepted. The Russian military has been using such drones in addition to mortar, artillery, and rocket strikes across Ukraine in recent weeks.

According to a Telegram post by Serhii Popko, the head of Kyiv’s city administration, the strikes came in two waves, and shrapnel from the intercepted drones damaged one administrative building and four residential buildings.

After the attack, which occurred before the start of the business day, the capital remained relatively calm. It appeared that the damage was minimal compared to the aftermath of other Russian strikes that have claimed lives and disrupted livelihoods across the country in recent weeks.

To signal that the morning commute in Kyiv was safe, authorities silenced an air raid warning system.

The blast blew out windows in parked cars and in a neighbouring building and left a gaping hole in the roof of a three-story administrative building in the central Shevchenkyvskyi district. At first, it was unclear if any lives had been lost.

Clean-up crews were quick to shovel away the rubble and roll out plastic sheeting to cover blown-out windows in the snow-covered capital, a testament to the Ukrainians’ responsiveness and resilience in the face of hundreds of such strikes in recent months. Unperturbed by the construction crews, one man pushed his child on a swing set at a nearby playground.

Russia’s nearly 10-month onslaught in Ukraine has largely spared the capital, but this attack showed how vulnerable it still is.

Russia has been bombarding Ukraine with air strikes for the past few weeks, mostly focusing on infrastructure, and fighting has remained active on the front lines in the country’s east and south.

More than 60 of 70 strikes, including 9 of 10 targeting the capital and its region, were intercepted by air defence systems during the latest round of Russian military volleys on December 5, according to Ukrainian officials.

The attack demonstrated the capital’s continued vulnerability, despite the fact that it has been relatively unscathed during the most recent stages of Russia’s nearly 10-month onslaught in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, U.S. officials said that their country was prepared to approve sending a Patriot missile battery to Ukraine, satisfying an urgent request from Ukrainian leaders who desperately needed stronger weapons to shoot down incoming Russian missiles.

On Monday, Zelenskyy again lobbied Western leaders to send his country more cutting-edge weapons in its war with Russia. Ukraine has been at war with Russia since Russia invaded on February 24, and the West has offered to supply them with the most advanced surface-to-air missile system in the West, the Patriot, to help them defend against Russian aerial attacks.

U.S. officials last week also claimed that Russia had been looking to Iran to replenish its stockpile of drones and surface-to-surface missiles.

“Awful And Despicable”

Officials say that late on Sunday, a drone attack damaged sunflower storage tanks and set fire to leaking oil at the Everi marine terminal in the southern city of Mykolaiv.

Nothing here is military-related. There is no military,” Andriy, a 47-year-old manager, who would only go by his first name, said. A Russian plot to “destroy the economy and to destroy food security,” as he put it.

The new UN human rights chief, Austrian national Volker Turk, has called for an end to drone strikes against civilian targets.

The United States Embassy in Kiev also voiced its disapproval of the “desperate and reprehensible” drone strikes. Russia claims the accusations are false.

Awful And Despicable

On Monday, Iran denied again to the media that it was providing the Russian Federation with drones. There has been no response from the Kremlin.

The European Union’s foreign ministers met in Luxembourg on Monday, with some of them calling for additional sanctions against Iran if evidence of Tehran’s involvement in Russia’s war in Ukraine can be uncovered.

After the drone attacks, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, said Russia should be kicked out of the Group of 20 and other international groups.

He wrote on Twitter, “Those who give orders to attack critical infrastructure to freeze civilians and organise total mobilisation to cover the frontline with corpses, cannot sit at the same table with leaders of G20.”

Russia has claimed that Ukrainian forces have attacked border areas in the Belgorod region. Reports from pro-Russian news outlets on Telegram stated that the airport in Belgorod was attacked by the Ukrainian military during the night. The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv did not immediately respond, as it usually does not to events occurring in Russia.

Conclusion

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, was cut off from the Ukrainian power grid once again on Monday due to renewed Russian shelling, according to the Ukrainian state energy firm Energoatom.

Russian forces occupy the plant, but Ukrainian employees run the show. The plant has been frequently shelled during the conflict.

A local official in the Dnipropetrovsk region of southern central Ukraine reported a large fire at an energy facility overnight due to a missile strike.

After an explosion on October 8 damaged a road and rail bridge connecting mainland Russia to Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, British military intelligence reported on Monday that Russia was facing more acute logistical problems in southern Ukraine.

The eastern city of Bakhmut and the nearby town of Soledar are currently experiencing heavy fighting, Zelenskiy said in his Sunday night video address.
