Des Moines police have released the names of the mother and daughter who were found shot to death in their home in the Merle Hay neighborhood on Monday morning.

After receiving reports of gunfire at 2:59 a.m., police were dispatched to the 2600 block of 53rd Street. Emma Parker, 20, and her mother, 47-year-old Danielle Remily, were found dead.

Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek said that the 22-year-old suspect in the shooting had dated Parker in the past. The suspect broke into the house, shot the occupants, and then fled, according to the police.

The man called 911 after the shooting to report that he had shot two people and was now on his way to Riley Park to commit suicide.

A block away from the crime scene, police located the suspect in a nearby park. It appears he was shot, and he was taken to the hospital, where his condition has remained critical as of Monday night.

The shooting occurred for mysterious reasons. The police have stated that there is currently no evidence of a continuing threat to the public. There have now been 19 homicides in Des Moines this year, and the deaths of these two women bring that number to 20.
