Puppy Mistakenly Euthanized

After a 3-month-old dog was unintentionally put to death, the Board of Supervisors has demanded improvements at the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control. Outrage has been generated by the death of Bowie the dog at the Baldwin Park Animal Center earlier this month. The manager of the Animal Care Center, Maria Rosales, stated that “all of the circumstances surrounding Bowie’s euthanasia is being looked at very thoroughly” and added that staff members at the shelter “truly regret” the puppy’s passing.

“The department takes seriously its responsibility to save lives. It is not treated casually at all. When they checked in with the shelter after Underdog Heroes Rescue claimed they were committed to preserving Bowie, they were informed that the dog had been euthanized. Shoshi Gamliel, the president of the rescue, told KTLA that she doesn’t know how this happened and that Bowie was in perfect health.

Authorities in Los Angeles are looking for answers regarding the inadvertent killing of 3-month-old dog called Bowie at a California animal shelter. Bowie was put to death earlier this month at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center, according to KCBS. On Tuesday, December 20, county supervisors asked for an investigation because of the outrage of the public.

Supervisor Hilda Solis reportedly said, “It’s quite sad to hear that this had occurred, and we unearthed more and more situations where this has happened earlier,” according to the station. According to KTLA, Maria Rosales, the center’s manager, informed managers that “all of the circumstances” surrounding Bowie’s passing are being carefully investigated. She said that the shelter staff found the puppy’s passing to be “extremely regrettable.” The department “takes its life-saving mission very seriously,” according to Rosales. It is never handled carelessly.

puppy died within 30 days

Bowie was a scruffy-looking terrier puppy with hazel eyes that wound up at the Baldwin Park animal shelter and had to wait weeks to be spared. The colour of Bowie’s eyes was brown. But when the puppy, who was just four months old, was killed on December 4, it caused a public outcry and prompted a request for an investigation into how dogs are adopted out and animals are killed at the county’s seven animal shelters.

Organisation to Investigate on Puppy’s Death

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered the organisation to investigate the puppy’s death on Monday. The members also agreed to take action to reduce the number of animals put to death while in the county’s care. Managers reportedly asked for an explanation of Bowie’s passing within 30 days, per KCBS. They also required the drafting of a 5-year plan to reduce the number of animals put to death in county shelters within 90 days. According to the Los Angeles Times, the six shelters in Los Angeles County have been “under fire for months,” with volunteers and rescue groups complaining that the animals are being abused.

Before the board’s motion, an investigation was already underway, according to Frank Corvino, deputy director of the department’s South County Operations, and it was started “as soon as the euthanasia of Bowie was found.” The agency’s human resources section is in charge of this investigation, which is still underway. While the investigation is still ongoing, Corvino assured that any mistakes found would be promptly and completely fixed.

“We will be reviewing every stage of Bowie’s stay,” he said. We regret any inconvenience this may have brought about. “The inquiry and response to this incident have been given top importance by the division, which takes the euthanasia of animals very seriously. This includes implementing any necessary corrective actions with reference to the staff.”

Proposal to reduce the use of Euthanasia on Animals

A proposal to reduce the number of animals euthanized while in the custody of Animal Care and Control was unanimously approved by the board of supervisors on Tuesday. Supervisor Hilda Solis, who was also a co-author of the motion, described the incident as “heartbreaking” while the meeting was still going on. She claimed that “we’ve identified more and more scenarios” in which a comparable incident had previously taken place. She noted that “a sizeable number of residents from the neighbourhood have expressed their wish for change to my office.”

Around 1/3 of the Animal Put To Death

The motion demands both a “full explanation” of the circumstances surrounding Bowie’s passing and a strategy for averting similar occurrences in the future. A five-year strategy to lower the number of animals put to death as well as the percentage of animals put to death will be presented to the Board of Supervisors by officials within the upcoming three months.

The Los Angeles Times reports that compared to the same month last year, county shelters housed double-digit more dogs and cats in October. Officials emphasised that between July and November of this year, around 4,000 of the 12,000 animals in the county’s care were put to death. Comparatively, the Los Angeles area’s animal shelters save about 87% of the animals they receive.
