First, the woman was shot. According to Staples, Myles heard a commotion and a gunshot, confronted the assailant, and was shot in the process. Chief Deputy Kevin Navarro of the police department described the shooting as “an act of senseless violence.”

“Judge Myles and I, along with the rest of law enforcement, work tirelessly every day to bring criminals to justice and make our streets safer,” Navarro said.

Therefore, “when incidents like this occur, it is not only a reminder of the ever-present challenge we have with illegal guns and the offenders willing to use them, but it is also a direct attack on the criminal justice system that keeps our society safe.”

Myles attended the University of Illinois College of Law and graduated with a law degree. In 1999, he received a judicial appointment to begin serving on the court. Chief Judge Timothy Evans said in a statement that Myles had been working in the criminal division since 2009. Myles had been appointed an associate judge by the circuit court in 2001.

“I join all of the judges today in the Circuit Court of Cook County in expressing our sadness regarding the tragic passing of our colleague and friend,” said Evans.

Evans elaborated, saying, “I have always known Judge Myles to be focused and determined in the pursuit of justice, and his conduct earned him the confidence and respect of the people who appeared before him. Judge Myles was well-liked and respected by those who worked with him in the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
