Boston man’s death in Connecticut police custody being investigated

The 55-year-old Boston man was reportedly arrested in South Windsor on Friday and charged with family violence. A man from Massachusetts who was being detained by police in Connecticut has died under suspicious circumstances.

On Wednesday, the inspector general’s office for the state of Connecticut announced that they would be conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kevin Doherty’s death.

The 55-year-old Boston man was reportedly arrested in South Windsor on Friday and charged with family violence. While waiting to be arraigned, he is being held in police custody on $250,000 bail.

Doherty was in “apparent distress” in his cell early on Monday afternoon, according to a statement released by the inspector general’s office. When officers arrived, they found him unresponsive and attempted CPR.

Doherty was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The office of the chief medical examiner is looking into his death.

A lawyer for Doherty who could comment on the situation was not immediately apparent. Chief Kristian Lindstrom of the South Windsor Police Department released a statement in which he expressed his department’s support for the inspector general’s investigation and condolences to Doherty’s family.

The Inspector General’s Office released a video in which a visibly agitated Doherty gets out of bed and proceeds to the camera. He drops to the floor, where he appears to lie on his side while trembling. Almost immediately after that, he collapses to the floor and lies motionless on his back.

Around 12:20 p.m. on Monday, dispatchers saw Doherty “in apparent distress in the South Windsor Police Department holding facility,” as reported by the inspector general. When police were called to check on Doherty, they discovered that he was unresponsive.

After beginning CPR, they rushed Doherty to Manchester Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just over an hour later.

Police Chief Kristian Lindstrom has offered his “thoughts and prayers to the Doherty family,” and the office of the inspector general reports that the South Windsor Police Department is helping with the investigation.
