Keenan Cahill, YouTube lip syncer who delighted millions, dies at 27 in Chicago hospital

CHICAGO — Keenan Cahill was a lip-sync phenom long before the hordes of TikTok users who now try to replicate his style.

Cahill, armed only with a desktop computer and a lot of enthusiasm, amassed millions of views on his YouTube channel by lip-syncing to popular songs. He even recruited A-listers like Katy Perry and 50 Cent to his cause.

His manager, David Graham, told CNN that Cahill, a charming, bespectacled musician in his own right, passed away in a Chicago hospital on Thursday. He was 27.

The Chicago native was diagnosed with Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome, a condition characterized by organ enlargement and other symptoms. He required regular medical attention and several operations. Open heart surgery was planned for earlier this month, per his confirmed social media accounts.

By filming himself lip-syncing at his teenage desk, Cahill became one of the first viral stars of the 2010s. The idea was straightforward: Cahill, who has always been a natural performer, would lip sync to popular songs of the time like “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” by Usher and “Only Girl (In the World)” by Rihanna, and the views would come pouring in.

One of Cahill’s most watched videos is him lip-syncing to Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” so naturally she was contacted after seeing the video. She gushed about his performance on Twitter and booked him for a 2011 show in Pennsylvania.

Cahill Suffering From Maroteaux Syndrome Lameness syndrome

Cahill announced a couple of months ago that he was going in for open heart surgery on December 15 to treat Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome. According to MedlinePlus, people with Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome experience progressive enlargement of multiple body systems, as well as swelling and eventual atrophy of other systems.

Patients with cardiac problems associated syndrome may also have heart valve abnormalities. According to his manager, David Graham, he was put on life support after the procedure and taken into medical care due to “complications.”

Keenan Cahill looks like a dwarf in many ways, including his short stature, crouching gait, restricted range of motion in his joints, and disproportionately large hands.

Cahill received a bone marrow transplant in 1997 after a childhood diagnosis of the disease. This helped to slow the disease’s progression. The intracranial pressure he was experiencing was treated with one of several surgeries he underwent.

He Became A Viral Sensation After Uploading Lip-Sync Videos

Cahill was one of the first internet celebrities after he posted lip-synced videos to YouTube in 2010. He was well-known among A-listers thanks to his videos, and his channel had around 720,000 subscribers. More famous people noticed him after seeing clips of his performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Katy Perry’s show.

Later on his YouTube channel, a number of famous people showed their support, including Jennifer Aniston, 50 Cent, and Katy Perry. In addition to Sara Bareilles and Cahill, the music video for “Uncharted” also featured Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, and Josh Groban.

By the end of 2012, Cahill’s YouTube videos had been viewed by around 500 million people. He uploaded both original tracks and cover versions to his channel on YouTube.
