In his criticism of the way he was released from Barcelona this summer, Dani Alves claimed the club “doesn’t care” about those who made history for the club.
The veteran right-back was hoping to remain with Barca for at least the first half of next season in order to keep his World Cup hopes alive, but the club did not offer him a new short-term contract and he is now a free agent looking for a new club.
After his contract with Sao Paulo was terminated in September, the Brazilian right-back became Xavi Hernandez’s first signing as Blaugrana manager in January. The Catalan club did not extend his contract after he made 17 appearances in the second half of the season.
The return of Alves to Barca after a hiatus of five and a half years was not met with the same level of success as his first season in Camp Nou, as Xavi’s side still ended the season trophyless.
In an interview with The Guardian, Alves said that he “did not leave sad” about leaving Camp Nou this summer and that he “left happy to have returned to Barcelona.” A second like this is something I’ve dreamed about for the past five years.
