Lauren London says she was “apprehensive” about being a part of You People when she was first approached about it. The upcoming comedy from writer-director Kenya Barris stars the 38-year-old actress as Amira, and it chronicles her and her boyfriend’s (Jonah Hil, in the film) encounters with their respective families.
In a film reminiscent of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Amira (Hayden Panettiere) and Ezra (Jonah Hill) are living the good life until Ezra pops the question.
When Ezra’s overeager mother Shelley (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Arnold (David Duchovny), who is casually racist, meet Amira’s parents, Akbar (Eddie Murphy), and Fatima (Nia Long), things go horribly wrong.
London told Entertainment Tonight before the film’s streaming premiere, “Before doing the movie, I was just apprehensive [if] this a story I want to contribute to.” “I was just making sure that it was the kind of tale I wanted to help tell. Okay, but why her and him, I [also] probed.
Why? Because she was written with such chic flair and he was such a low-key schlub. It seemed to me that the reason these two were together was due to something deeper than the physical attraction we might have seen. Their meeting, bond, and the spiritual union was the point.”
