Penn Dayton Badgley is a well-known actor in the United States. He is most known for his appearances as Dan Humphrey in the teen drama series Gossip Girl (which aired on The CW from 2007 to 2012) and as Joe Goldberg in the thriller series You, which airs on Netflix (2018–present).

Badgley, the son of Duff and Lynne Murphy Badgley, was born on November 1st, 1986 in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2008, his father, a carpenter and home builder who had previously worked as a newspaper reporter, ran as the Green Party’s candidate for governor of Washington.
An only child, Badgley first attended Woolridge Elementary before transferring to St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia (where his mother was the PTA president). He attended Tacoma, Washington’s Charles Wright Academy. Along with Blake Lively, who would become his co-star and companion, Badgley is rumoured to have attended home school.
When he was 12 years old, his parents separated. He recalled wanting to “create music… as a 12-year-old,” and in 1998 he recorded an unreleased pop single. He later described the effort as “awful” and “misguided” in an interview.
