On December 28, 1934, Margaret Natalie Smith was born in Ilford, Essex. Her father, Nathaniel Smith (1902-1991), was a public-health pathologist from Newcastle upon Tyne who worked at the University of Oxford. Her mother, Margaret Hutton, was a Scottish secretary from Glasgow. Her parents used to tell Smith as a youngster the sweet tale of how they had met while travelling by rail from Glasgow to London through Newcastle.

When she was four years old, she relocated to Oxford with her family. Her older twin brothers were Ian and Alistair, who passed away in 1981. Later attended an architectural school. Smith attended Oxford High School until the age of sixteen, at which point she departed to pursue an acting career at the Oxford Playhouse.

On June 29, 1967, Smith got hitched to actor Robert Stephens. They divorced on April 6, 1975, and have two sons: the actors Chris Larkin (born 1967) and Toby Stephens (born 1969) At the Guildford Register Office, Smith wed playwright Beverley Cross on June 23, 1975, and the couple remained together until his passing on March 20, 1998. In response to the question of if she felt lonely in 2013, she said, “it seems a bit meaningless, going on one’s own, and not having someone to share it with.” Smith has five grandchildren.
