Early Life and Crimes

Ed Kemper was born on December 18, 1948, in Burbank, California. He had a troubled childhood, with a domineering mother who frequently belittled and berated him. At the age of 15, he ran away from home and committed his first murders, killing his grandparents in their home.

He was sent to a psychiatric hospital and released after five years.

After his release, Kemper moved in with his mother and began killing young women in the Santa Cruz area. His victims included six college students, two of whom were his mother’s friends.

He would pick up the women hitchhiking, take them to secluded areas, and then strangle or stab them to death. He also engaged in necrophilia and dismemberment of his victims’ bodies.

Capture and Trial

In 1973, Kemper turned himself in to the police after killing his mother and her friend. He was quickly arrested and charged with eight counts of murder.

During his trial, Kemper waived his right to a jury and instead asked for a judge to determine his guilt. He was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Life in Prison

Ed Kemper was sent to the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, California, where he remains to this day. Despite his heinous crimes, Kemper has become somewhat of a celebrity among true crime enthusiasts. He has been interviewed extensively and has even appeared in documentaries and television shows about serial killers.

Kemper has also become something of a mentor to other inmates. He has completed several college courses and has even helped to develop educational programs for other prisoners. He has also given interviews about his crimes, offering insights into the mind of a serial killer.

Is Ed Kemper Still Alive?

As of March 2023, Ed Kemper is still alive and serving his life sentence at the California Medical Facility. Despite his infamy, he has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years. In a 2019 interview with Oxygen, his attorney revealed that Kemper is in poor health and uses a wheelchair due to diabetes and other health issues.
