As the 49th vice president of the United States, Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician and attorney. She is also the first African American and first Asian American vice president, making her the highest-ranking female official in American history.

Harris, a California native born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, is an immigrant’s daughter. Her mother was born in India, and her father in Jamaica. Harris and her younger sister Maya were brought up by their mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, as a single parent following their parents’ divorce.

Harris enrolled at Howard University, an HBCU in Washington, D.C., after graduating from high school. Upon completion of her legal education at the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, she started her legal career as an assistant district attorney in Alameda County.

Harris was chosen to serve as the City and County of San Francisco’s District Attorney in 2003. As a lawyer, Harris started shattering barriers right away. As California’s attorney general, Harris made history in 2010 by becoming the state’s first female and African American attorney general.

She went on to work as a deputy district attorney in Oakland from 1990 until 1998, during which time she earned a reputation for being a stern prosecutor while working on cases involving gang violence, drug trafficking, and sexual assault. She was the first woman and the first African American to hold the job after she was elected attorney general of California in 2010, winning by a margin of less than 1 percent. As Attorney General, Vice President Harris was successful in obtaining a $20 billion settlement for Californians whose homes had been foreclosed on. Additionally, she was successful in obtaining a $1.1 billion settlement for students and veterans who had been exploited by a for-profit education company.

Both of these settlements were won while Vice President Harris was in office. She was a national leader in the battle for marriage equality, defended the Affordable Care Act in court, and enforced environmental legislation. In addition, she was a law enforcement official.

At the beginning of 2015, Harris made the announcement that she would be running for president. During her campaign, she advocated for improvements to immigration and criminal justice, as well as increases to the minimum wage and the protection of women’s reproductive rights. In 2016, she won the race with little difficulty.

Not much longer after that, Harris made the announcement that she will be running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020. As a result of Biden’s decision in August, Harris became the first person of African descent to be included on the national ticket of a major political party.

In November, she made history by becoming the first woman of African descent to be elected to the position of Vice President of the United States.

Harris and attorney Doug Emhoff went on a blind date in 2013, thanks to a mutual acquaintance who introduced them. Emhoff, a legal representative for the entertainment industry, was appointed partner-in-charge of Venable LLP’s Los Angeles office.

On August 22, 2014, Harris and Emhoff exchanged vows in Santa Barbara, California. Cole and Ella Emhoff, the children of Emhoff’s first marriage to film director Kerstin Emhoff, have Harris as their stepmother. Harris and her husband were thought to be worth $5.8 million as of August 2019.
