In any other election, having a gay, libertarian member of Silicon Valley’s elite speak at the Republican National Convention on the same night as the nominee would be…unconventional.

However, it is now generally accepted that most things regarding this election, including the aforementioned speaker Peter Thiel, are merely that.

It was on Thursday night that Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal, made history by coming out as gay at the Republican National Convention.

“Every American is an individual,” Thiel remarked. “I embrace my sexual orientation and am not ashamed of it.

I take great pride in my affiliation with the Republican Party. Above all else, though, I am pleased to call myself an American.”

Anti-LGBT Imaginable

Despite the party having just approved one of the most anti-LGBT imaginable platforms.

Including opposition to marriage equality and bathroom choice for transgender people and an endorsement of the medically discredited practice of “conversion therapy,” the remarks were met with applause.

Trump’s vice presidential pick, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, is also divisive in LGBT advocacy circles due to his signing of a so-called “religious freedom” bill last year that was widely interpreted as an attempt to legalize anti-LGBT discrimination.

North Carolina’s House Bill 2

But it appears that Thiel doesn’t give a hoot about laws like that. In addition, he doesn’t seem to care about more recent legislation like North Carolina’s House Bill 2.

Which is intended to prevent transgender people from using restrooms that are consistent with their gender identities.

“When I was a young man, the topic of discussion was how to counter the Soviet Union. And the victory was ours “On Thursday, he made the announcement. “According to recent reports.

The heated argument centers on who should have access to which restrooms. This is not going to solve any of our actual issues. Indeed, who gives a damn?”

The Announcement

The announcement earlier this year that Thiel would run as a delegate for Donald Trump in California sent shockwaves through the predominantly Democratic Silicon Valley.

The 48-year-old has said that, to him, technological advancement is “the single most important issue” and the key to resolving all of the world’s problems.

However, Trump has threatened to “close down” certain areas of the internet in response to terrorism, and he has suggested a boycott of Apple until the company agrees to assist the FBI in hacking into the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters.
