Life of Grace Kelly
Kelly was born in Philadelphia into a rich Irish Catholic family; her father, gold-medal winning oarsman John B. Kelly, and her uncle, dramatist George Kelly, were both in the family. Before enrolling in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in 1947, she received her education in convent and private schools.
She worked as a model for photographers to pay for her schooling. Following several seasons of performing in summer stock, Kelly made her Broadway debut in August Strindberg’s The Father in November 1949.
In the early 1950s, she was cast in a series of television dramas. She made her big-screen debut in 1951, playing a supporting role in Fourteen Hours. She had a breakthrough the following year in High Noon as Gary Cooper’s Quaker wife.
