Gorillaz, Damon Albarn’s “virtual” band, performed their first show without masks at a major UK venue, starting off a two-night run.
They usually perform while hidden behind screens, with holograms suddenly materialising in front of the audience, but last night they just played as themselves.
Paul Simonon and Mick Jones, formerly of The Clash, are now members of the live band but had not played together in nearly 30 years until they collaborated on Gorillaz’s most recent album, Plastic Beach.
Gorillaz included Mos Def and soul great Bobby Womack at their show at The Roundhouse in Camden, north London. It had been over four years since their last UK performance, not including warm-up gigs for dedicated fans.
For a long time, the band hid behind cartoon personas; in reality, it was just Blur’s Albarn and his ex-flatmate, the cartoonist Jamie Hewlett.
Over the band’s history, Gorillaz’s live concert has been presented in a variety of ways, including obscuring the touring band from sight during the early years of the project and showing the animated band members on stage via computer graphics.
This gave curious fans a deeper understanding of the Gorillaz Face Reveal. To learn more about the band’s members and the recent reveal of the Gorillaz’s “Face,” keep reading down this page.

About Gorillaz
The UK band Gorillaz first got together in 1998 as a virtual band. It was founded in London, England, by singer Damon Albarn and artist Jamike Hewlett. 2-D (vocals, keyboards), Murdoc Nicclas (bass Guitar), Russel Hobbs (drums), and Noodle are the band’s four animated members (Guitar, keyboards, vocals).
Interviews, music videos, and short cartoons/comics all contribute to the presentation of their made-up world. Albarn is the only consistent musical contributor to Gorillaz, but the band’s music frequently features guest musicians.
Damon Albarn is the Gorillaz’s primary vocalist. Damon is well-known for being the frontman of the band Blur. They got along well enough to make Britpop a reality. Albarn and Hewlett watched MTV and the idea for Gorillaz was born.
Comic book artist and author Jamie Hewlett. Albarn moved away from the Britpop of his band Blur with Gorillaz, exploring “eccentrically postmodern” musical forms that incorporate elements of hip hop, electronic music, and world music.
Triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe were earned by the band’s 2001 debut album Gorillaz, which featured dub, Latin, and punk influences. Six times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US: that’s how successful their second album, Demon Days, was.

Gorillaz Face Reveal
Despite the fact that they are a virtual band, the identities of the people behind the characters who make up Gorillaz have always been kept secret. The names of the people behind the animated band members have long been the subject of speculation among fans, but the artists have always remained tight-lipped.
In spite of this, the band’s “face reveal” has been the subject of much curiosity and rumour in recent years. As of 2021, fans still have not been treated to a formal face reveal by the designers of the Gorillaz characters, despite their avid anticipation.
To paraphrase what Damon Albarn stated in an interview in 2021: “the anonymity is what makes Gorillaz distinctive, it’s what allows people to project their own ideas and emotions onto the band.”
Whether or not the members of Gorillaz will ever unveil their faces is up in the air, but there’s no denying the enduring popularity of the band’s groundbreaking premise and music.
The band’s ability to keep their identities and activities shrouded in mystery has contributed significantly to the appeal of their music and personas. Even if the band’s identity were revealed, their followers would likely continue to appreciate the music and cartoon characters regardless.
Two MTV Video Music Awards, one Grammy Award, and three MTV Europe Music Awards were already in the Band’s trophy case. They received eleven nominations and took home the trophy for Best British Group at this year’s ceremony.
Conclusion
The British musician Damon Albarn and the American visual artist Jamie Hewlett formed Gorillaz as a virtual band. Two-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs are the four animated members of the band, which established in 1998 and became famous for its animated music videos and live performances.
Hewlett, like many others, considered young Damon to be an overly enthusiastic and egotistical jerk. Yet a series of tumultuous relationships brought them together, and when they discovered they shared a disillusionment with the MTV era of music, they decided to make some changes.
Gorillaz was formed in this way.
There have been others who have helped out here and there. For instance, Russel’s voice actor, Remi Kabaka Jr., is also the band’s music producer. To aid in the creation of the debut album, Damon enlisted the services of hip-hop producer Dan “the Automator” Nakamura. Naturally, Del the Funky Homosapien supplied the bulk of the rap instrumentals.
Hence, the true Gorillaz is a collection of many different sorts of skilled musicians and artists. Yet at its heart, it’s just Jamie and Damon, two British guys with impressive artistic pedigrees whom you probably wouldn’t know on the street.
