Chicago fire: Firefighter Jermaine Pelt dies, 2 others injured in West Pullman, CFD says

On Tuesday morning, Jermaine Pelt, a fireman in Chicago, died in the West Pullman area from injuries sustained in an extra-alarm blaze.

The flag is at half-staff and purple bunting has been hung outside of Firefighter Pelt’s station. The devoted husband and dad has spent the past 18 years protecting Roseland.

“When the chief asked if we wanted to be taken out of service, we declined, since this is not something Jermaine would do. Jermaine refused to take a sick day, “as CFD Captain Rory Ohse put it.

Pelt, who turned 49 just a few weeks ago, was among the first firefighters to arrive at the scene of the incident on Tuesday morning.

A Chicago firefighter died early on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, while battling a blaze at a home on the city’s South Side. One of three firefighters hurt in the incident was 49-year-old Jermaine Pelt, who has been a member of the Chicago Fire Department since 2005. Sadly, he did not make it out of the accident alive, and his death was confirmed by Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

Pelt’s legacy includes a 6-year-old son and a daughter, who he recently walked down the aisle to marry. According to the commissioner, Pelt’s daughter found out about the tragedy while on her honeymoon.

The death of the Chicago firefighter came as a huge surprise to his loved ones and coworkers, especially because he had just recently married off his daughter. The news has shocked some of his coworkers. When asked about the firefighter’s death, Lieutenant David Bernicky said:

“No one could believe something so unbelievable had actually occurred. He was active in the community and served as a paramedic in addition to being a certified nurse.”

At the same time, we were informed by the authorities that Pelt had been transported to Christ Hospital, where physicians and medical workers were performing CPR and doing their best to revive him. The family has not commented on the situation at this time.

Authorities, however, report that the news of his death has devastated the entire town, especially his fellow firefighters, colleagues, relatives, and daughters.

Nonetheless, Pelt and the other two injured firefighters are no longer in immediate danger and are making full recoveries.

Since 2005, Pelt has been serving at his firehouse. His daughter just got married, and he celebrated his 49th birthday by walking her down the aisle.

Pelt is a parent, too; his kid is 6 years old.

They answer these calls without knowing if they would be returning to their families, Nance-Holt said. Prayers are requested.

On Tuesday, Commissioner Nance-Holt gave an emotional speech. They were colleagues and she was familiar with Pelt.

The cause of the disaster is still unknown, however Nance-Holt has stated that there was no explosion and that he was not trapped in the flames.

The fire forced the evacuation of two adults and two children, but thankfully everyone is safe.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the fire department.

Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of the city, made an announcement on Twitter, writing, “I was shocked to learn this morning that CFD veteran Jermaine Pelt, who had served for 18 years, had died on the job this morning.

My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones, his CFD brothers and sisters, and the rest of Engine 75 for this terrible loss. Working as a first responder requires a certain kind of fortitude, one that allows one to face crises and potentially life-threatening situations on a daily basis.

In a selfless act of bravery and dedication to the people of this city, Jermaine answered this call. Our community is here to offer comfort to Jermaine’s family and friends as they grieve his devastating death.”

Once “conditions worsened” in one of the burning buildings, where Pelt was operating a hose, he was deemed to have perished. Firefighters were told to evacuate the building, but as they were giving the order, Pelt “went down.”

Nance-Holt claimed he was “immediately spotted” near the hose line by his lieutenant, who was also injured but is now doing well in the hospital.

“Despite our best attempts – our firefighters and paramedics, they worked tirelessly on Jermaine conducting CPR all the way from the site to Christ Hospital,” she said.

The circumstances behind Pelt’s passing are still being examined.

We have suffered a tremendous loss,” Nance-Holt added. “Jermaine is part of the family. And when one of us dies, it really hurts the rest of us. We experienced today what firefighters and paramedics go through every day when they react to incidents like this, never knowing if they will return home the next day.”
