According to Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, Lt. Jan Tchoryk, 55, “went down” on the 11th floor staircase.
The fire broke out on the 27th floor of the condo and apartment complex in the Gold Coast district just before 8 a.m. Tchoryk’s death will be investigated by a coroner or medical examiner.
This is the second firefighter death in Chicago this week; Tchoryk is the second. On Tuesday, 49-year-old firefighter Jermaine Pelt perished while combating a house fire on the South Side of the city. Two other firemen were injured.

Tchoyrk was a selfless person who dedicated his life to helping others. He enlisted in the Navy and participated during Desert Storm before joining CFD in 1997.
Tchoryk started working there back in 1997. He had been one of the first firefighters at the scene, riding as a passenger on Ladder 10 only hours before his death. Later, it was at the forefront of the parade from the hospital to the medical examiner’s office.
“A friend texted me saying we had another mayday,” CFD Capt. Rich Savoia said. A nasty, dismal feeling rises up inside of you, and your stomach sinks.
A minute of silence was held for the two fire fighters who lost their lives on Wednesday night in Chicago before the annual Valor Awards were presented.

By 9:40 a.m., the fire had been extinguished in most of the building, however it was still burning in one apartment on the 27th floor.
Alderman Timmy Knudsen (43rd) said he is trying to locate temporary lodging for people who have been displaced by the fire.

Tchoryk, now 55 years old, joined the Fire Department in 1997, according to Nance-Holt. Lightfoot claimed to have met his son at his inauguration as a police officer for the city of Chicago.

According to Nance-Holt, Tchoryk served in Operation Desert Storm while in the Navy before he joined the Fire Department. She described him as a “avid outdoorsman” who enjoyed bicycling and riding motorcycles and who was quite proud of his large family.
Former firefighter and 38th District Alderman Nick Sposato expressed his sadness at the passing of Tchoryk. When he and Tchoryk first started working together, some 25 years ago, they were assigned to the same battalion.
Sposato, a former police officer turned politician, ran into Northwest Sider and union activist Tchoryk at one of his events. He was “a good guy,” as described by Sposato.
Under an American flag draped between two fire truck ladders, firefighters formed a procession for the second time in as many days to transport the body of a fallen comrade to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Tchoryk was saluted by scores of uniformed police officers, including interim police superintendent Eric Carter. His body was carried by his trusted Engine 10 fire vehicle.
Nance-Holt stood over Tchoryk’s casket, which was draped in an American flag, and spoke to the emergency personnel who had come to the scene.
