The Previous Month, A Similar Event Occurred

After answering to an emergency on the city’s Southwest Side on Wednesday, a Chicago law enforcement officer was fatally shot.

The incident took place in the 5200 blocks of South Dorchester Avenue, reported to the COPA, which investigates fatal shootings of police officers. Reportedly to the Chicago County Medical Examiner’s Office, the officer was 32-year-old Andres Vasquez-Lasso.

Commissioner David Brown, the superintendent of the police department in Chicago stated at a press conference that officers responded to a complaint at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday claiming a woman experienced being pursued down on a sidewalk by a guy with a gun.

According to preliminary reports and Brown’s statement, two police vehicles responded to the site and found an armed 18-year-old male. According to Brown, the police gave chase and fired at the suspect from close range.

Shooting victim Vasquez-Lasso was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai. After being shot in the head, the 18-year-old’s condition is described as “critical” by Brown. Brown told the media that Vasquez-Lasso, who has been with the police department in Chicago for five years, “has an exciting future lying ahead of him.”

As Brown put it, “you can imagine that this tragedy has hit this family of public employees very, very hard.” No one in their right mind would want to deal with this as a family.” On Wednesday night, he claimed, police were still piecing together material to hand over to COPA.

Chicago’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, remarked at a press conference that “Our hearts goes out for that young officer’s family.” “And I agree with the principal,” I added. We must pray for the officer’s family and comfort them in their time of loss.

Lightfoot stated she wants to remind consumers that police officers put themselves in harm’s way “every day of their lives on every shift” for the greater good of security for everyone, and she urged people to appreciate police for their service.

Family members of fallen officer Andres Vasquez-Lasso expressed their sorrow at his untimely death in the line of duty in a post to the site. The community has lost a brave and selfless law enforcement officer in Andres. We shall never forget his service and his ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.

Brown had just announced that he would be departing from the Chicago Police Department at the end of the month, and the shooting happened a little over two hours later.

Conclusion

Until the fatal shooting of Officer Vasquez-Lasso in August 2021, when Officer Ella French tragically passed away in the line of duty during an investigation of a vehicle in West Englewood, no Chicago police officer had been shot and killed while on the job. The Morgan brothers, Emonte and Eric, have been named as suspects.
