The young Dewald had a crush on this graceful sport. When his older brother Reinard was away at college, his mother would bowl with him for hours. He first played in people’s backyards, then moved on to parks, and finally got to practice on actual cricket fields.

Northerns, a South African first-class cricket side, extended an offer to him in April 2021 to appear for them during the upcoming 2021-22 domestic season. From the safety of backyards and parks, a small child was making his way into the illustrious world of cricket.

After that, on October 8th of that year (2021), he was given the chance to play for the South African Under 19 Team in a South African regional T20 Knock out event.

He was given the chance, and he took full advantage of it. He hit two fours & four huge sixes in his 25-ball total of 46 runs. When he left, he didn’t glance back.

The next day, on December 26, 2021, he made his ODI debut for South Africa’s Under 19 squad against the West Indies Under 19 team. This time, instead of batting, he helped out by getting three crucial wickets with the ball.

South Africa selected him for their Under-19 World Cup of 2022 squad in November 2021. His first game against India saw him score 65 runs off of 95 balls, catapulting him into the spotlight.

He batted with great fervor throughout the tournament, ultimately surpassing Shikhar Dhawan’s record for most runs scored by an individual player in one U19 World Cup. The previous record holder was Shikar Dhawan with 505 runs; Dewald surpassed him with 506.

Baby AB became known for his stunning play in the Under-19 World Cup. His moniker honors AB De Villiers, a cricketing wizard and one of among the most beloved players in the history of the sport.
