In February 2022, South African amateur cricketer Dewald Brevis rose to notoriety by being awarded the ‘Player of the Series’ in the 2022 ICC (International Cricket Board) Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
South Africa, despite his best efforts, placed seventh out of 16 teams. South Africa finished in seventh place, the lowest of any team since 2002, when Tatenda Taibu from Zimbabwe won the trophy despite leading his team to ninth place.
Dewald scored 506 runs (2 hundreds and 3 half-centuries) in only 6 games, enough for the tournament’s highest batting average of 84.33. Also, in those six games, he had grabbed seven wickets.
He earned a spot in the ‘Team of the Tournament’ nods from both the ICC and ESPNCricinfo for his efforts. He joined Northerns, a team competing in South African cricket at home, in April 2021, just before the 2021-22 season began.
